Stakes are the primary weapon Neville used to kill vampires. Most of the time he murdered them while they were sleeping. He used a hammer to drive stakes into their hearts. Neville was taught by his physician, Dr. Bush, that this was the only way to kill them.
As well, Robert Morgan used a stake and hammer during his struggle to survive. At one point after three years, he found metal tipped arrows, hinting that he was not the only survivor.
